For a milestone dinner with real occasion, two addresses stand apart. Babylon Rooftop sits on level 7 above Pitt Street Mall with eleven spaces running from an 18-seat room to the 400-guest Ishtar, and Bellevue Woolloomooloo on the Finger Wharf pairs French-Japanese banquets with an upstairs Chef's Table for 10, alone on its level. For a particular cuisine, Esteban in Temperance Lane serves four-course Mexican banquets across two levels for 70, and Menzies Bar & Bistro @ Shell House on Margaret Street seats 100 when the whole bistro is booked.
At Royal Albert Hotel in Surry Hills outside food and drink aren't allowed, with a celebration cake the exception. Cardea lets an outside caterer in without charging a buyout fee, Soultrap welcomes outside caterers, and The Gantry @ 3Danks Waterloo lets you bring your own caterer as well as BYO alcohol free of charge. Camelia Grove Hotel welcomes celebration cakes too, though a cakeage fee may apply for functions. Infinity at Sydney Tower will take a pre-order for a celebration cake, or charge cakeage per person if you bring your own.
Canapé-led rooms quote by the head: Untied and Level One @ Cargo Bar from $48 per person, $50 per person at The Oriana, The Winery and Babylon Rooftop, from $60 per person at The Glenmore Hotel and Dove & Olive from $65 per person. Pub floors tend to use a minimum spend instead, such as Terrace Bar @ Dunkirk Hotel from $500 minimum spend, Lounge @ Maloney's Hotel from $550 minimum spend and $600 minimum spend at Level One @ Gaslight Inn. At the lower end, Uncle Ming's dumpling packages start from $25 per person and grazing Upstairs @ Henley's from $28 per person; at the top, Sofia on Cleveland's whole first floor runs from $7,000 minimum spend. In Potts Point, Bloom Potts Point's Italian standing packages start from $45 per person and Arms Length's shared chef's set menus from $65 per person.
At the top end, 650 can stand in Hyde Park Ballroom @ Doltone House Hyde Park, 550 in Grand Ballroom @ Rydges World Square and 418 at Pumphouse Sydney on Little Pier Street. The Gantry @ 3Danks Waterloo, a performance studio with a sprung hardwood floor, takes 350, and at The Oriana the ground floor and pub together reach 1,000. On Pier 8/9, Elements Bar & Grill Walsh Bay takes 500 for a full-venue cocktail party.
Carousel Bar & Ballroom holds the latest licence, 5am, in its Oxford Street club. Maze Karaoke and Sugar Karaoke run their rooms to 4am, The Gold Bar @ Tatler is licensed until 3am, as is The Alcove, and Level One @ Gaslight Inn has to finish by 1am.
