A distillery visit gives a group something to taste, something to learn and sometimes a bottle to carry home. The three Melbourne experiences on this page are all run by small producers, two making gin and one making whisky.
Here's Looking at You, Kid is a family-run distillery on Errol St, North Melbourne, where guests make their own gin on a mini copper still. Groups of 2 to 35 choose between a hosted tasting, a 200ml class built on one shared recipe, or a 500ml bottle each, from $95 per person. Group packages start with a G&T and include grazing boards plus beer, wine and soft drinks.
Little Lon Distilling Co. runs its gin masterclass inside a heritage-listed workers' cottage from 1877 in the CBD. Guests taste the four core gins, look through the copper still room and end on a cocktail, also from $95 per person, for groups of eight or more. Starward Distillery & Bar in Port Melbourne is the whisky option, with 45-minute guided tours that pour three whiskies from $49 per person, and a longer masterclass through the barrel hall with seven whiskies to taste.
Matching the experience to the group:
Add a mixing session from Melbourne cocktail classes, or carry on to one of the city's private dining rooms.
