Most 18ths in Wollongong are planned by two groups at once: the birthday crowd, who want music, a dance floor and photos worth posting, and the parents, who want a private room, a clear arrangement at the bar and somewhere for the speeches. The function rooms below run bar tabs, so the drinks budget can be fixed before anyone arrives.
In the city, Scarlett's @ Illawarra Steelers Club is a first-floor room for 220 standing with a stage, microphone and speakers, and its pizza-and-pasta packages start from $35 per person. North Wollongong Hotel gives its whole top floor to one party, with a private bar and two balconies, while Terrace Bar & Lounge @ Balgownie Hotel has milestone packages from $52 per person that bundle food, staff and a bar tab.
Smaller groups often skip the function room and book an activity instead: escape rooms or karaoke at Breakout Bar & Escape Rooms, bowling and laser tag at Timezone & Zone Bowling Illawarra in Albion Park, or a round robin on the lanes at Battle Axe Throwing.
