About Frankie Cadillac

Frankie Cadillac is a cocktail bar on the corner of Albion Street in Surry Hills that bills itself as the home of the negroni, with dozens of versions on the list. The vermouths, syrups and liqueurs are made on site, there is a house gin, and the kitchen turns out flatbreads and bar food to go with the drinks. Inside it is dark and intimate, with exposed brick, a chandelier, oil paintings and a green-tiled bar. There are three ways to book it. The front room, just inside the door, seats 18 as set up or around 22 for a close group, with a red velvet banquette and stools along the walls. The bar area in the middle of the venue seats 26, plus stools at the bar and around the edges. Hiring the full venue gives you both rooms and the tables outside on the footpath. Any of the spaces can be cleared of chairs for a standing cocktail party, for a modest furniture-moving fee on top of the booking fee. Food and drink are flexible: a set menu, a drinks package or ordering from the menu as the night goes. A minimum spend applies to every booking and changes with the day, date and time, so the team quotes it after you send your date and numbers through the enquiry form. Frankie's opens from late afternoon on weekdays and from early afternoon on weekends, and regular visits are walk-in only, so an event booking is the way to secure a space.

I went in to this venue tonight with my wife because she told me she likes a negromi. I'd never heard of them and I was hoping for something a little bit exotic. What I was given was a really bitter perfume bottle that I…
