A Yarra Valley birthday usually means a long lunch rather than a late night. The venues here are mostly winery restaurants and estate function rooms, which suit a 40th, 50th or 60th spent over several courses with the vines just outside.
Weekdays and Sundays are the easier days to book, since many estates keep Saturdays for weddings. If it has to be a Saturday, ask early and be ready for a minimum spend.
What birthday groups typically pay and check:
Agree on the trip before the invites go out. A minibus from Melbourne or a nearby town means everyone can enjoy the wine list, and nobody is stuck as the designated driver.
Compare a few venues by sending enquiries with your date and numbers. The quotes come from the venues themselves, without any commission or booking fee on top.

The venues that publish prices mostly charge between about $60 and $105 a person, typically for the food. Drinks are usually extra, either as a package or on consumption.
Some venues host evening events, but many cellar doors are set up for daytime trade. Ask about the finish time and whether evenings carry a surcharge.
Some do, but plenty of winery venues decline them or set conditions. Ask up front and be clear about the age of the group.
A minibus or coach is the easiest answer, especially from Melbourne. Ride-share is patchy in the valley, so don't count on it for the trip home.
Sundays and weekdays usually have the most availability. Saturdays are often held for weddings, especially through spring and autumn.
Most venues allow it, sometimes with a small charge for cutting and plating. Check whether they'd rather supply a dessert of their own instead.
Many estates welcome families at lunch, particularly those with lawns and gardens. Ask about children's menus and whether there's room for them to run around.
For a weekend in autumn or spring, a few months ahead is safer. Quieter months can often be arranged with a few weeks' notice.
