Putting Together a Southern Highlands 30th Birthday

A Highlands 30th usually means friends travelling in for the weekend, a big dinner and a dance floor. The music and styling are the parts to book first, since good DJs fill spring and autumn Saturdays early.

DJs here cover most of the region, from Mittagong and Berrima through Bowral, Moss Vale and Robertson.

What a Highlands 30th tends to include:

  • A DJ with MC hosting and a photo booth from $900
  • A DJ who handles both music and the microphone for the night, from $2,750
  • House, R&B and hip hop sets, with a saxophonist who can join in
  • A karaoke host with mics and song lists, for the friends who always grab the microphone
  • Table styling and flowers through Highlands event stylists, with packages from $1,000
  • Retro and throwback sets for a crowd that wants the songs from their school years
  • A booth with props so friends who have scattered can take home a printed strip

Briefing the DJ

  • Share a must-play and a do-not-play list a fortnight before
  • Ask about lighting, since many country rooms are softly lit
  • Confirm the finish time with the venue before the DJ quotes

The weekend around it

  • Book accommodation for friends in Bowral, Moss Vale or Berrima early
  • A winery visit or long lunch the next day keeps the group together
  • Chartered coaches collect guests from several villages after the party
