Uncle Ming's sits below street level in Ferrier Hare House at 55 York Street, reached by a staircase in front of the Roman Daniels suit shop. It has traded as a hidden bar since 2012, and the look is all red lanterns, curtains, dark corners and vintage Chinatown bits and pieces. The venue is strictly 18 and over, so it suits adult birthdays, work drinks and engagement nights rather than family gatherings. There are three ways to book it for a group. The whole bar can be hired exclusively for about 100 people standing or 88 seated. The Lair is a private dining area off the main room that seats 22 or holds 30 for drinks, and it can be split into a semi-private section with two long tables. The Den is a curtained-off corner of the main floor for 24 seated or 30 standing, for groups that want some separation but still like the noise of the bar. Food is served share-style from the steamer baskets and fried menu. The Light Bites package gives each guest 10 pieces for $25, Uncle's Favourites gives 14 pieces for $35 and the Substantial option gives 16 pieces for $40. Drinks can run on a bar tab, from a set list, or as a package: the standard package of Tsingtao, house wines and soft drinks is $45 per person for two hours, and the premium version is $60. A welcome cocktail can be added for $18 per person. Bookings for nine or more go through the events enquiry form.
