About Bar @ Golden Age Cinema & Bar
Golden Age Cinema & Bar is in a heritage-listed theatrette on Commonwealth Street, in the corner of Surry Hills that used to be Sydney's film district. The building dates from 1940 and housed Paramount Pictures in Sydney until the 1970s, including wartime newsreel screenings for servicemen and women. Since 2013 it has run as an independent cinema, with a bar inspired by David Lynch, live music and film trivia. The bar is what wins people over. The lighting is low and warm, the walls are mahogany, the curtains are deep velvet and the seats are leather. It takes up to 70 for a cocktail party or around 35 seated in a relaxed setup. Stage and sound equipment are in the room, as well as a mirrored stage that stays hidden until needed, so speeches, a live act or a short performance are simple to put on. The venue puts together its own food and drink packages, with a seasonal menu, well-made cocktails and plenty of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free choices. You can bring in outside catering for a buyout fee. It works for a birthday with a sense of theatre, a brand activation, a team celebration or a small wedding party.
