Clear allPicking a venue near the office saves a December night of taxis and late trains, and around the city the end-of-year options fall neatly by precinct. A team near Wynyard, one working out of a Surry Hills warehouse and one in a Pyrmont tower can each find a room within walking distance, so the practical question is which station or street the staff already use.
Most workplaces also mix new starters with senior people, so it helps to choose a room that offers somewhere to talk as well as a place to dance.
Start with the part of town the office sits in:
Teams that want a later finish usually head east. Dulcie's Kings Cross gives the whole underground cocktail bar over to 60 guests, Crown Street's Level One @ Gaslight Inn covers five hours for a $600 minimum spend, and Tatler, hired whole, runs three bars plus an outdoor garden terrace. On William Street, Hyde Park House runs functions of 20 to 300 over four levels up to Slims Rooftop, and down the hill in Woolloomooloo The Bells Hotel trades until 1am Monday to Saturday and charges no hire fee for its function room, while The Old Fitzroy Hotel, at 129 Dowling Street, books its function rooms through the Odd Culture Group's events team.

Grazing at The Rook starts from $25 per person, at Upstairs @ Henley's from $28 per person and menus at Aerial Function Centre from $35 per person. Above 319 @ Vibe Hotel Darling Harbour starts from $33 per person, canapés in the Beer Garden @ Iron Duke Hotel from $34 per person. Royal Albert Hotel starts from $45 per person, Untied from $48 per person, The Oriana and Babylon Rooftop at $50 per person, with Dove & Olive from $65 per person, Melba's Rooftop from $90 per person and Elements Bar & Grill Walsh Bay from $104 per person. Among the smaller rooms, Arches on Market's cocktail packages start from $55 per person, Camelia Grove Hotel's group set menu from $60 per person and Lana's sharing menu from $129 per person.
Dulcie's Kings Cross can add a cocktail class, a whisky tasting or a champagne tower to a full-venue hire. Maze Karaoke and Dynasty Lounge @ Dynasty Karaoke put teams on the microphone, and Two80 Cabaret was designed for live performance, with a stage ready for a comedian or band. On Kellett Street, Bloom Potts Point can teach the team to make pasta, a class it pitches at team building.
Every level of The Oriana is reachable by lift, and Oasis @ Sanctuary Hotel has step-free, wheelchair-accessible entry on Kent Street. Level One @ Cargo Bar has no wheelchair access, though its ground floor does through the wharf entrance, so check the floor before you book. Centro 86 can arrange lift access on request, and Goros has step-free entry off Mary Lane with an accessible bathroom.
Carousel Bar & Ballroom on Oxford Street, a purpose-built nightclub, can be hired outright by a company of up to 350. A club-style room licensed until 3am, The Alcove @ Pennys Potts Point suits a smaller team, and Middle Bar @ Kinselas Hotel, with its long marble bar, makes room to dance for 150.
