Clear allTurning 30, 40 or 60 between the CBD and the bay usually comes down to two choices: how many people you are inviting, and whether the night is a long-table dinner or a dance floor with a DJ. The region's venues are spread across South Melbourne, St Kilda, St Kilda East, South Yarra and Port Melbourne, and each suburb leans a different way.
Where different-sized birthday groups land:
For a 21st or 50th with a truly long guest list, The Timber Yard at 351 Plummer Street is hired exclusively: a climate-controlled warehouse for up to 1,500 standing and a turfed yard with festoon lighting, each with a long bar of its own, from $11,000 room hire.

Lamaro's Hotel has the most choice for small seated groups: the Atrium for 22, The Wine Room @ Lamaro's Hotel seating 24 around a single oak table, with a degustation option and the heated Birdcage for up to 45. The Local Taphouse also takes groups of 8 to 25 in a private dining room with table service, and its Louvre Room seats 25.
The Sunroom @ Hotel Esplanade looks across the bay through floor-to-ceiling windows on the St Kilda foreshore, and outside it a deck holds 40, or double that when all of it is booked. Main Hall @ Bells Hotel faces the other way, towards the city skyline.
Main Hall @ Bells Hotel takes 250 to 300 for a cocktail event, and parties over 65 guests need security there. Golden Gate Hotel on Clarendon Street can be hired whole for up to 370 standing. Beyond that, the Port Melbourne warehouse holds up to 1,500 standing and is licensed until 11pm Sunday to Thursday and 1am on Fridays and Saturdays.
The Timber Yard lists BYO food and works with its catering partner, external caterers or food trucks. The pubs in the region cater from their own kitchens, with Bells doing all of its catering in house.
