Booking Photographers: What to Know

Peninsula photographers spend a lot of their time among vines, gardens and beaches, and the light here is a big part of what you're paying for. Golden hour over the bay, a cellar-door terrace or the cliffs at the ocean end can carry a set of photos, as long as your photographer knows where to stand and when.

There are nine photographers listed so far, and five of them also shoot video. That's a modest list, so it's worth looking through every profile rather than stopping at the first few.

Before you choose:

  • Among the handful showing a price, starting figures run from roughly $700 to $1,700, which usually reflects a shorter booking or a basic wedding package
  • Full-day wedding coverage, a second photographer or a printed album will lift the figure, so ask what the starting price actually covers
  • Look at complete galleries, not just highlight images, to see how a photographer handles a dim reception room as well as a sunny lawn
  • Check how many edited images you'll receive and how long the gallery takes to arrive
  • If a business plans to use the photos for marketing, confirm the licence covers that

Wind off the bay and cooler evenings in the hinterland can change a plan quickly, so talk through a wet-weather or sheltered option for portraits. Sunset timing shifts a lot between seasons, which matters if you want photos in that window.

Pick a few photographers whose work you like and tell them your date, venue and how long you want covered. Each quotes you directly, and there's no booking fee or commission.

Matching the Photographer to the Event

  • For a wedding, ask whether they cover getting ready, the ceremony and the reception, or only part of the day
  • An engagement party or 40th often needs only two or three hours of candid coverage through the speeches
  • Corporate events may need headshots and branded shots, plus permission to use them publicly
  • If you also want film, a photographer who works alongside a videographer – or does both – keeps the day simpler

Questions Worth Asking First

  • Have you shot at our venue before, and where do you usually take portraits there?
  • What's the plan if it's raining or blowing a gale at the time we'd set aside for photos?
  • How are travel costs worked out for venues in Sorrento, Portsea or Flinders?
  • Is a second shooter included, or an extra?
  • What deposit do you take, and what happens if our date moves?

Fitting Photos Into the Day

  • Build a gap into the run sheet for group shots and couple portraits so dinner isn't held up
  • Give the photographer a short list of must-have family groupings and someone who knows everyone's names
  • Ask your celebrant about rules on photography during the ceremony
  • Coordinate with the florist so arbours and table pieces are in place before the photographer arrives

Questions About Booking Event Photographers

How much does a photographer cost on the Mornington Peninsula?

Only a few list a price, and those start from about $700 to $1,700. Longer coverage, a second shooter and printed products add to that, so compare full written quotes.

Do photographers here also offer video?

Several do – more than half of the photographers listed also shoot video. Booking both from one business can make planning and timing easier.

How long does it take to get our photos back?

It varies widely between photographers, from a couple of weeks to a few months for a full wedding gallery. Ask for a firm timeframe before booking, and whether you'll get a preview sooner.

What happens to outdoor portraits if the weather turns?

A good local photographer will have sheltered spots in mind at your venue, such as a verandah, barrel room or tree line. Discuss this beforehand so you're not deciding on the day.

Will a photographer charge extra to travel to our venue?

Some include the whole Peninsula, while others charge for longer drives to the southern beach towns or Western Port. Give the venue's suburb when you enquire so the quote includes it.

Can we use the photos for our business?

Personal-use rights are standard, but commercial use may need a separate licence. Mention it upfront for any work function or product launch.

How far ahead should we book?

For a summer or spring wedding Saturday, as early as possible once your venue is set. Shorter parties and midweek events are usually easier to fit in at shorter notice.
