About The George Ballroom
The George Ballroom sits on the first floor at 129 Fitzroy Street in St Kilda. The room was built in 1886 to serve as the dining hall of the old George Hotel, and in later decades it was known as the Crystal and Seaview Ballroom and hosted live music. The room keeps its Victorian character: an ornate ceiling, vintage light fittings, layered and distressed walls, a gilt-framed feature mirror and a wall of inbuilt draping. Guests arrive by a marble-floored art deco staircase lit by a stained-glass window, and there is an old lift in the foyer that doubles as a photo spot. The ballroom seats 150 for a dinner or holds 220 for a cocktail event, and the layout moves easily from seated dining to a dance floor. It is used for weddings and ceremonies, milestone birthdays, baby showers, formals and school balls, fashion runways, brand launches and corporate end-of-year parties. Catering is handled exclusively by the in-house team, whose chefs, sommeliers and mixologists put together modern menus. The sample canapé list runs from torched kingfish nigiri and cacio e pepe arancini to wagyu sliders and supper bowls, and plated menus offer entrées such as burrata or scallops and mains such as beef cheek, lamb rump or barramundi. Packages start from two hours, and events finish by 11pm on Friday and Saturday or 10pm from Sunday to Thursday. An event coordinator helps with planning and a supervisor runs the night itself. Pricing is supplied on request, and the venue offers tours for couples and event hosts. Send an enquiry to book.
