Clear allDeciding where in Hunter wine country to hold a birthday comes down to the kind of day you picture. Pokolbin has the deepest choice of winery estates and vineyard restaurants; Mount View, up in the foothills south-west of Cessnock, has a rooftop terrace and a French bistro; Lovedale offers a resort steakhouse and a garden estate; and North Rothbury, near Branxton, has a big modern pub.
A group travelling in for the weekend will want somewhere to stay and a plan for transport, while locals from Cessnock or Maitland may only need a long lunch or a night out.
The region's birthday options at a glance:
There's no train among the vineyards, so think about how guests will get between venues. Huntlee Tavern runs a courtesy bus on set routes, Chateau Elan, Greystone Estate and Harrigan's have rooms on site, and Bistro Molines has a two-bedroom cottage on its property.

Pokolbin gives more variety close together, from Ben Ean's courtyard to Twine Restaurant's private room and Greystone Estate's exclusive-use property. Mount View sits higher, in the foothills, with Mount View Estate's three event spaces and Bistro Molines' French menus.
Mount View Estate's Vista Terrace takes up to 1,000 standing and its two halls 400 each. Ben Ean holds 450 standing and Chateau Elan 330 for cocktails. Huntlee Tavern also has indoor and outdoor areas for large celebrations.
Huntlee Tavern in North Rothbury is a contemporary gastropub that hosts milestone birthdays, with a pub menu of steaks, pizzas, ribs and share plates, and live musicians or a DJ can be organised. Harrigan's Hunter Valley in Pokolbin is another, with live bands on Friday and Saturday nights and a 30-seat Oak Room for a smaller group.
Starting points include Gather from $75 per person, Chateau Elan from $79 per person, Ben Ean from $80 per person, Bistro Molines from $110 per person and Amanda's on the Edge from $135 per person, which includes wine.
