About Breakout Bar & Escape Rooms

Breakout is a bar on Crown Lane in central Wollongong with five escape rooms built into it, all tied to one storyline about Professor B, his time machine and his missing love Tessa. The Asylum sends players through a mostly abandoned hospital, Deadwood Heist is a raid on a crooked bank in the Wild West, The Future jumps to the year 2047, Temple of the Ancients is set deep in a jungle, and Motel 666 is a former safe house with the hardest puzzles. Rooms take two to 10 players, are designed around four to six, and are booked privately for one group. Each game runs 60 minutes after a 15-minute briefing, and a game master watches the room and sends hints when needed. There are no live actors or jump scares. At the back of the venue, The Cocktail Lab is a hidden bar used for private 90-minute classes. Groups pick three cocktails when booking, start with a beer or wine at the main bar, then make each drink with a bartender, and any of them can be made alcohol-free. Classes take four to 15 people. The two karaoke rooms, the Theatre and the Library, are soundproof and fitted with two microphones each, with more than 10,000 songs and drinks served in the room. Groups of 10 or more can book combined packages: an escape room plus karaoke, a cocktail class plus karaoke, or an escape room plus a cocktail class. Catering can be ordered from Kneading Ruby or Deli & Dine on Market, and the bar can run an open tab or a set spend. Escape rooms start at $29 a person before 5pm Friday and $39 at weekends. Players must be 12 or older, under-16s need an adult in the room, and all under-18s must leave by 6pm. The venue is reached by stairs, so let the team know in advance if anyone needs help with access.

How long should we allow?

Allow about an hour and a half: a 15-minute briefing, then 60 minutes in the room. Many groups book extra time for a drink at the bar afterwards.

Can under-18s come?

Escape room players must be at least 12. Those aged 12 to 15 need an adult in the room, 15 to 17 year olds need a guardian on site, and all minors must leave by 6pm.

What does the cocktail class include?

The 90-minute class in The Cocktail Lab costs $69 a person and includes a welcome drink plus three cocktails you choose when booking. It needs at least four people and takes up to 15.
