About Battle Axe Throwing

Battle Axe Throwing is an axe throwing venue on Crown Street in the middle of the Wollongong CBD, fitted out for the sport from the ground up. Founders Chloe and Matt set it up to grow axe throwing around the Illawarra, and it runs everything from casual group sessions to weekly league nights under International Axe Throwing Federation rules. Every booking is coached, and your group keeps the same coach on its lane from the first throw. A standard group session lasts two hours. It opens with a welcome and safety briefing, moves into coaching on one-handed and two-handed technique, then switches to a round robin tournament with a finals playoff and a champion named at the end. Private lanes hold six to 13 people, and groups of 14, 30 or more can book two or three lanes together with an extra coach at no added cost. Birthdays, hens and bucks parties, and corporate teams make up much of the bookings, and smaller groups of two to five can join shared public sessions on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The venue is open from 10am to 10pm daily by appointment only, and sessions must be booked online at least 24 hours ahead with a deposit. Throwers must be at least 12, and anyone under 18 needs a parent or guardian with them. No alcohol is sold, and anyone affected by drugs or alcohol can't throw. The lanes have room for motorised wheelchairs, a ramp can be placed at the entrance, noise dampeners are kept at the front desk, and support workers throw at half price. Wear closed-toe shoes and arrive 15 minutes early to sign waivers.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a session cost?

A private group lane for six or more is $55 a person for two hours, with a $165 deposit at booking. Small groups of one to five pay $60 each in a shared public session.

What happens during a session?

Your axe coach starts with a welcome and safety briefing, teaches one-handed and two-handed throws, explains the scoring, then runs a round robin tournament with finals and names a champion.

Is there a minimum age?

Throwers must be at least 12 years old. Anyone under 18 needs a parent or legal guardian present, and that adult signs the participant waiver on their behalf.

Can we drink at the venue?

No alcohol is sold, and the venue has a zero drug and alcohol policy, so anyone under the influence won't be allowed to throw. Many groups head out to nearby bars and restaurants afterwards.

What should we wear and when should we arrive?

Closed-toe shoes are required, and anything else is fine. Arrive at least 15 minutes before the start so everyone can sign waivers and payments can be settled.
