The Merton Hotel is a corner pub at 38 Victoria Road in Rozelle with a bar, a bistro, rooms upstairs and a regular live music program. The owners describe the aim as running a real pub: good beer and wine, pub food, live bands and a function space. Beers on tap include Guinness, Coopers, Young Henrys and Stone and Wood, and the bistro menu leans towards curries, tacos and share plates. Functions centre on the beer garden, which takes groups of 25 to 60-plus. It catches afternoon sun, is strung with fairy lights after dark, and has a retractable roof and heaters, so it works through winter as well as summer. The garden has its own drinks service bar, and for something more polished you can add a martini bar with a dedicated bartender. Smaller groups can use the Indoor Lounge, a fireside room off the main bar for 15 to 25, and the whole hotel can be requested for larger events. There is no fee to book. The kitchen shapes the food around your budget, whether that means platters of finger food, canapés, a buffet or ordering from the bistro menu, and packages combining canapés and drinks can be put together if you ask. You can run a tab across the night, and table service comes free. The pub has hosted birthdays, engagements, school and family reunions, fundraisers, work parties and wedding receptions in the garden.
