About Toorak Bowling Club
Toorak Bowling Club was started by locals in 1913 and still runs on the efforts of its volunteers. The weatherboard clubhouse on Mandeville Crescent overlooks the green, and alongside its Saturday pennant sides the club has built up a strong social membership of people who drop in for a roll on a sunny afternoon or a drink at the bar. From October to April, on days when no pennant is being played – which is most Saturdays – the club takes bookings for barefoot bowls and outdoor BBQ events. Group bookings start at eight people, with bowling charged at $20 a head and BBQs hired at $25 each. It suits Christmas parties, birthdays and casual work get-togethers. The club doesn't supply food, so groups cook for themselves on the barbecues and leave them clean and working at the end. Smaller groups under eight can ring on the day to see whether the green is free. Inside there are two spaces to hire. The main hall seats up to 70 at tables of six, or holds 100 standing, and comes with a stage, projection screen and lectern for speeches or presentations. The pool room is more informal, with two three-quarter snooker tables, leather couches and a TV on the wall, and fits around 30 guests. There is a commercially equipped kitchen, and larger parties are encouraged to bring their own caterer. Hirers arrange the furniture and look after catering and cleaning (other than the floors), which keeps the set-up flexible for anything from a 40th to a business meeting.
