About Fitzroy Victoria Bowling & Sports Club
Fitzroy Victoria Bowling & Sports Club is a community bowls club on Brunswick Street, right on the edge of Edinburgh Gardens in Fitzroy North. Alongside its members' green and pennant teams, it opens a separate social green to the public seven days a week, and groups come here for a few hours outdoors with a drink in hand – birthdays, hens and bucks days, work socials and end-of-year parties all fit the format. The public green sits directly in front of the clubhouse, close to the bar and beer garden, and has ten synthetic rinks. Bookings run for two hours and start on the hour, and the hire fee covers the bowls, the rest of the equipment and a short demonstration from staff on how to play. Each rink takes eight to ten people, so larger groups book more than one. The only dress rule is footwear – bare feet, socks or flat-soled shoes, with no heels or spikes – and nobody eats, drinks or smokes on the green itself. Groups of more than 12 also book a private BBQ area, which comes with a gas BBQ, tables, seating, a heater and marquee cover. You can bring your own food to cook, or order from one of the club's contracted caterers; takeaway and delivery services aren't allowed. Drinks come from the licensed bar only, and the group can run a bar tab, opened when you arrive, with wristbands for guests. For bigger functions there is a combined marquee, deck and bar area for 60 to 100 guests, and the clubhouse can be part-hired. Send an enquiry to book.

Frequently asked questions
How much does barefoot bowls cost at Fitzroy Victoria?
From November to February it is $20 a person for groups under eight, or $200 per rink for groups of eight or more. From March to October the rates are $15 a person or $150 per rink. Each booking covers two hours.
Can we bring our own food and drinks?
Food yes – you can bring your own to cook on a private BBQ, along with your own utensils, plates and condiments. Drinks no: the club is fully licensed, so every drink, soft drinks included, is bought at the bar.
What happens if it rains on the day?
If the weather is bad at the time of your booking, the club will move the bowls to another date or refund the hire. Cancellations made in advance because of a forecast are not accepted.
Can kids play, and are dogs allowed?
Kids are encouraged to have a go, as long as parents or guardians supervise them closely. Well-behaved dogs are welcome too, provided they are kept under control.
How do we get there, and is there parking?
The club has no private car park; there is limited street parking nearby and more on the eastern side of Edinburgh Gardens. Tram route 11 stops right outside at the club's own stop, number 20.

Tommy's two burgers was absolutely delicious. Worth the long wait. Beef patties on charcoal hits on another level.

Had a burger for lunch here which was delicious. Looked like a friendly group of people playing lawn bowls. We'll have to return to try out a game.
