About Blackburn Bowls Club
Blackburn Bowls Club has been part of the local community since the 1920s and sits on Pakenham Street, where it runs two grass greens and one synthetic green. Alongside its pennant sides and member events, the club opens its facilities to the public for private hire, and that is where groups planning a birthday, a work function or a family get-together come in. A hire can take in the function hall, the outdoor entertaining area, the bar and the synthetic green. The hall seats roughly 120 at tables and chairs, which hirers can arrange however they like as long as everything goes back afterwards, and the club's P/A and audio-visual gear is available. Out on the synthetic green, which is lit for play until 10pm, the club lends bowls sets free of charge and an instructor is on hand to teach the game to people who have never played. Food is up to you: the commercial kitchen comes stocked with crockery, cutlery and equipment, so you can self-cater or bring in a professional caterer, and the hire manager can show you or your caterer around beforehand. Drinks are handled by the club bar, as the liquor licence rules out bringing your own. The bar carries beer, wine, spirits and soft drinks, with two beers on tap, and can order in particular drinks for your event with five days' notice. Quotes come from the club's functions manager, and bookings are confirmed with a booking form. Outside private hire, the club runs Wednesday Night Owls and Friday night barefoot bowls between January and March, which are open to everyone.

Frequently asked questions
How many guests can Blackburn Bowls Club hold for a function?
The hall seats about 120 people at tables and chairs, and hirers can rearrange the layout to suit, as long as it is put back to its original setting at the end.
Do we need to know how to play bowls?
No. Bowls sets are provided to hirers at no extra cost, and a club instructor is available to show your group how the game works and get everyone rolling.
Can we bring our own food and drinks?
Food yes – the commercial kitchen suits self-catering or an outside caterer. Drinks no – under the club's liquor licence all beverages must come from the bar, which can order in specific drinks with five days' notice.
How late can a function at the club run?
The synthetic green has lights that can be used until 10pm, and the bar must close by 11.30pm under the liquor licence. Noise needs to stay at a reasonable level for the neighbours.
How much does it cost to hire the club?
Hire prices are not published. The functions manager quotes each event, and bookings are made by completing the club's booking form and emailing it back.
