About Hilda's Bar @ The Illawarra Hotel
The Illawarra Hotel is an independent pub on the corner of Keira Street in the centre of Wollongong, built in the 1930s and open from lunch until late every day. It works closely with local brewers, distillers and growers, has a bistro and a cocktail list built on regional spirits, and hosts functions in several parts of the building. Hilda's Bar is the hotel's private function room, named after Hilda Condon, the pub's first licensee. It is a moody, timber-lined bar with chequered floors, booth seating, a pool table and a bar that guests can use directly from the room. The booths seat about 15 to 20 and the room holds up to 50 standing, which suits cocktail-style birthdays, dinner parties and company drinks. Audio and TV connections are built in and there is room for a DJ. The pool table can stay in play, be covered with a hard top to become a table, or be moved out for a $100 fee where operations allow. Booked for exclusive use, Hilda's Bar has a minimum spend of $2,000. Function catering starts with platters for 10 to 20 people, then canapé packages from $15 per person for three pieces up to a $50 per person package with antipasto, five canapés and pizza slabs; pizza slabs are also $50 each. The hotel can also run long-table banquet dining for 20 or more and a private cocktail-making class. Vegetarian, vegan, halal-friendly and gluten-friendly options are available, and minors may attend under licensing conditions until early evening.
