The Friend in Hand Hotel has been pouring beers at 58 Cowper Street in Glebe since 1857. It is a straightforward neighbourhood pub built around sport on the big screens, pool, cold beer and a kitchen turning out schnitzels, steaks and burgers, and the Top Bar is the part of the building it sets aside for proper parties. The Top Bar holds up to 100 guests with a mix of seating and standing room around its own timber bar. It has pool tables, a dartboard, a jukebox, big screens for live sport and a presentation screen for speeches or slideshows. There is room for a DJ to set up, the room opens onto an outdoor courtyard, and private hire can be arranged. The pub pitches it at milestone birthdays, sports team nights and company events. For smaller groups the pub also has a fireside Bistro for 35 and a mural-lined Courtyard for 20, both with no hire charge or minimum spend. Food for functions comes as platters of 20 pieces, ordered by the platter rather than per head. Hot options include vegetarian spring rolls, cauliflower bites, pumpkin arancini, calamari, chicken tenders, lamb koftas and chicken and mushroom tartlets, and cold platters run to king prawns, beetroot and feta tartlets and Sydney rock oysters, with salads alongside. Groups of 20 or fewer can simply book a table online; for anything larger, send an enquiry with the date, time, event type and head count, or call in to look over the room first.
