About The Royal Oak
The Royal Oak is a two-level pub at 36 College Street in Balmain, one of the suburb's older hotels. Maureen Thornett and her daughter Sophie have run it as a family business for more than 30 years, and downstairs it trades as a local with a sports bar, a skylit dining room and street-side seating, open for lunch, dinner and drinks every day from 11.30am. Functions take place on the top floor. The space runs across light-filled rooms with timber floors, lounge chairs, a fireplace for cooler months and an outdoor balcony, and it has a private bar with a view out to the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It holds up to 140 people for a cocktail party or 50 at tables, and it is booked for everything from engagement parties and christenings to wedding receptions, milestone birthdays and staff presentations. For stand-up events the kitchen prices finger food by the piece, from $4.50 skewers, spring rolls and arancini to $7.50 wagyu sliders, with a minimum of 24 of each item, plus platters such as squid, peking duck pancakes, maki rolls and pizza slices from $90. Seated groups of 20 to 40 can take a set menu of shared starters, a choice of mains and dessert, at $75 per person for two courses or $85 for three, and a table-share menu is $85 per person for 12 or more. Room hire, cakeage and linen are charged separately, so ask the team for a quote.

We had a lovely lunch here and the warm (log fire) and bright setting was great for a winters day. The baby roast chicken was delicious as was the desserts especially the sticky date pudding. Great wine list also.
