About Goodradigbee Distillers

Goodradigbee Distillers is a working distillery at 41 Orchard Road in the Brookvale Arts District, founded by John O'Connor and named after the Snowy Mountains river where he learnt to fly-fish. Instead of oak barrels, it matures its whisky and gin in cubes cut from Australian hardwoods such as Ironbark, Jarrah and Tasmanian Blackwood, which draw out flavour and colour far faster than a cask. Its bar, The GoodBar, sits among copper stills and Indigenous artwork and is used for booked experiences and functions. The hands-on highlight is the Gin-Off. Over two hours, teams of four or more hear from John about what each of 30 botanicals brings to a gin, design their own recipe, then light the stills, sample the spirit as it comes through and dilute it to bottling strength before the results are judged. Everyone leaves with a bottle of the gin they made, and the winning team also takes home Goodradigbee's Freshwater Gin. It is pitched at team building but works for hens parties and birthdays too. For a more classic format, one-hour tastings cover seven gins or whiskies from Australia and abroad, while masterclasses step up to ten pours plus a walk through the distillery and tastes of exclusive spirits that are yet to be released, with gin and whiskies-of-the-world options. The GoodBar can also be booked outright for private parties and Christmas functions. Drinks cover beer, house wine and simple cocktails, and food can come from in-house catering, a preferred caterer or a food truck serving burgers, tacos or pizza. Groups bring their own DJ or band and set up the room with long tables or lounges.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Gin-Off work?

Teams of at least four pick from 30 botanicals to design a recipe, run it through the stills, taste as it distils and dilute it before judging. It takes two hours and costs $80 a head.

Do we take anything home?

Yes. Every Gin-Off participant leaves with a bottle of the gin their team made, and the winners also receive a bottle of Goodradigbee Freshwater Gin.

What is the difference between a tasting and a masterclass?

Tastings last an hour and cover seven gins or whiskies from around the world and the distillery's own range. Masterclasses add up to ten pours, a walk through the stills and tastes of spirits not yet released.

How many people do we need?

Tastings and masterclasses need a minimum of three guests, with experiences starting from $70 a head. The Gin-Off needs at least four people per team.

Can we hire the whole venue for a party?

Yes. The GoodBar takes private functions and Christmas parties with a $4,000 minimum spend and a 50% deposit. You choose the food option, drinks and music, and can add the Gin-Off.

I love this distillery. A truly unique range and new flavours for the pallet. I can’t believe the alcohol content and how smooth each of them are. My particular favourites are the coastal gin and all of the whiskies. Joh…

Been here only a few months. Friendly bar service. Comfy leather seats. Cosy atmosphere. Interesting range of drinks. No rude security staff, unlike some places in Brookvale.

I haven't been to the distillery but I need to be honest about the product. I love the idea and I really wanted to love the spirits, but I have tried both the whisky and the gin and both are... not good. Really harsh on…
