About The Happy Wombat
The Happy Wombat is a restaurant and bar at 575 Hunter Street in Newcastle West, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The fit-out is warm and a little industrial, with timber tables, bookshelves and hanging plants, and the menu draws on native Australian flavours. Drinks lean towards Australian and New Zealand independent craft beer, local wines and a list of aperitifs and cocktails. The venue is split into areas that can be booked on their own or together. Wombat Corner takes up to 30 standing or 10 to 20 seated and suits a smaller group. The restaurant holds 60 standing or 50 seated, and the front bar, the best spot for mingling, takes 80 standing or 50 seated. Wombat Corner and the restaurant combined fit 90 standing or 70 seated, and the whole venue can be booked for up to 120 people. For food, canape packages for groups of 20 or more come in bronze, silver and gold tiers, with hot and cold items such as arancini, sliders, gyoza, squid and tartlets. Groups of 15 or more can choose a seated menu instead, with shared entrees and alternate-drop mains and desserts, priced on request. The bar can run a tab, subsidised drinks, or three and four-hour drinks packages covering tap beer, wine, soft drinks and, at the top tier, house spirits. Birthdays, Christmas parties, corporate events and other celebrations are all catered for, and the team works with hosts on a package to fit.
