About Lowlands Bowling Club
Lowlands Bowling Club sits on Dawson Street in Cooks Hill, right alongside Centennial Park, and has been bowling since 1892, making it the oldest registered club still running in the Newcastle area. Locals call it Lowies. The clubhouse has a bar, a bistro and two synthetic greens, just off the Darby Street cafe strip. Functions are held in the club's large undercover outdoor area, which is sheltered from the weather and can be partly closed off from other patrons, so a group gets its own corner while still enjoying the open-air feel. The space looks over the greens and the park, and groups can book tables there for anything from a small get-together to a big gathering. Function guests are welcome to use the social green for a casual game of barefoot bowls, which is a natural icebreaker for work groups and mixed crowds. Food can be handled three ways. Groups can cook for themselves in the sheltered barbecue area or bring their own nibbles and platters, order plates from Little Castro, the bistro on site, or arrange catering ahead through Little Castro Catering for as many as 200 people, with menus that range from casual canapes to banquet-style dining. Drinks come from the club bar. The club takes birthdays, baby showers, family gatherings, workplace functions and Christmas parties, and bookings start with a call or message to the club.
