St Andrews Conservatory is the function room of the St Andrews Hotel at 128 Nicholson Street, Fitzroy, looking across to the Carlton Gardens. It is booked exclusively for one event at a time, and the events coordinator handles birthdays, engagements, Christmas parties, showers, christenings, corporate functions and weddings, at lunch, in the afternoon or in the evening. The room is a conservatory: a glass roof lets in plenty of daylight, and dozens of white paper lanterns hang beneath it, lighting the space after dark. There is a fireplace for winter, two heating and cooling units, and room for a dance floor. Standing, it takes 160 with a dance space; seated, it fits 122 with a large dance floor or 140 without, and a pair of long tables seats up to 68. Speeches are covered by roving microphones, a lectern, an in-built sound system you can plug a phone or laptop into, and a 42-inch wall screen. There are two ways to pay. You can book the room for a $440 hire fee, choose a canapé or plated menu priced per person and run a bar tab, with a beverage minimum of $25 per guest. Or you can take an all-inclusive package that rolls food, five hours of drinks, the room, table linen, centrepieces and cake service into one price per person. Tastings can be arranged, and the team keeps a list of trusted music, styling and furniture suppliers.
