About Flemington & Kensington Bowling Club

The Flemington & Kensington Bowling Club, known locally as Flem-Ken, sits at the meeting of Racecourse, Epsom and Smithfield roads in Flemington. It has been a bowls club since 1892 and runs without poker machines. The number 57 tram stops beside the club, Newmarket station is nearby, and free parking is available on Smithfield Road. There are three spaces to hire. The Main Hall takes 50 to 300 guests, or about 150 seated, and has a dance floor in front of a stage. The Roy Gerbing Room suits 30 to 100 and has competition pool tables, while the outdoor function space holds 15 to 50 under cover. Both indoor rooms face the green through large windows, and each has a wall-mounted television and a sound system. The Main Hall adds a projector and screen, and opens straight onto the main bar. The Roy Gerbing Room has a private bar with two taps, staffed by a bartender you can hire through the club. The synthetic green is playable in most weather and is lit, so barefoot bowls can run into the evening. Up to eight people play on a rink at once, and a rink can take 20 guests who rotate. Bowlers go barefoot or wear flat shoes. The bar pours craft beer and cider across 10 taps, alongside wine, spirits and non-alcoholic drinks. No drinks may be brought in. For food, hosts can arrange their own catering, and the club lists caterers and food trucks that work with the venue. The venue can be hired seven days a week, in an afternoon or evening slot. Send an enquiry to book or to arrange an inspection.

Frequently asked questions

Which room suits a party of 120?

The Main Hall is the one for that size. It takes 50 to 300 guests standing and seats around 150, and the tables can be moved to suit your layout.

Can we bring our own food?

Yes, you can organise your own catering, and the club lists caterers and food trucks to choose from. Only function room bookings include use of the kitchen. Outside caterers need a nominated food safety supervisor, and a member of the public using the kitchen completes a short online food safety course first. The kitchen must be left clean, or a $100 cleaning fee applies.

Can we bring drinks?

No. The club holds a full liquor licence and no drinks of any kind can be brought in, including soft drinks. The bar has 10 taps plus wine, spirits and non-alcoholic options.

Does the club host 18th or 21st birthdays?

No. The club does not take bookings for 16th, 18th or 21st birthdays, or bookings made by minors. Hens and bucks groups need to tell the club about the nature of the event when booking.

Can we have a band or a DJ?

Yes. You can bring your own equipment for a band or DJ, and the Main Hall has a stage and a dance floor. Any outside entertainer must provide a certificate of public liability insurance 14 days before the function.
