About Beer Garden @ The Empress Hotel
The Empress Hotel is a bright corner pub on Nicholson Street in Fitzroy North, with a Public Bar, a Dining Room and a leafy Beer Garden. It opens every day from midday until late, and the Beer Garden is where most of its parties happen. The courtyard is heated and covered by a retractable roof, so it works in any season. For a relaxed gathering of 20 to 80 people, the team ropes off a section of the garden for your group, with no minimum spend, hire fee or deposit attached. Groups larger than 80, or anyone wanting the courtyard to themselves, can book it privately for up to 120 guests on a minimum spend that depends on the day and time of year. A private booking is also the way to go if you want speeches, decorations or your own music, which a roped-off section can't offer. Stand-up drinks and sit-down lunches or dinners both suit the space. The kitchen runs three finger food packages at $20, $32 and $40 per person for groups of 20 or more. They cover pub bites such as cauliflower bites, zucchini fritters, chicken wings, sausage rolls, sliders and mini parmas, and individual items can be added by the piece. Pizzas from the regular menu can be pre-ordered for big groups, and vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are marked. The bar pours a carefully chosen wine list and a tap list that changes every week, and a bar tab can be set up with the team if you'd like one. Catering is optional on section bookings, so a casual drinks catch-up is fine too. The pub hosts 30th birthdays, engagement parties, hens, Christmas and end-of-financial-year functions, and day-after wedding gatherings, though not 18th or 21st birthdays. Send an enquiry to book and the team will confirm availability and pricing for your date.

Frequently asked questions
How many guests can the Beer Garden hold?
Booked privately, the Beer Garden takes up to 120 guests. A roped-off section suits 20 to 80 people, and cocktail-style semi-private events usually run at 60 to 80.
Is there a minimum spend or hire fee?
A section of the garden carries no minimum spend, hire fee or deposit, and you don't have to order catering or a bar tab. Exclusive use of the whole Beer Garden has a minimum spend that changes with the day of the week and time of year.
What food packages are available?
Finger food packages are $20, $32 and $40 per person for a minimum of 20 guests, built around pub bites like wings, fritters, sausage rolls, sliders and mini parmas. Extra items can be ordered by the piece in lots of 20, and pizzas can be pre-ordered for large groups.
Can we decorate, give speeches or play our own music?
Not in a roped-off section, because it stays open to the rest of the pub. If those things matter, book the Beer Garden or the Dining Room for exclusive use on a minimum spend.
Does The Empress Hotel host 18th or 21st birthdays?
No, the pub doesn't cater for 18th or 21st birthday parties. It regularly hosts 30th birthdays, engagements, hens parties, work functions and Christmas parties.
