About Sail Melbourne Charters
Sail Melbourne Charters is a small, family-owned yacht charter run by Dean and Pam, two experienced sailors who know Port Phillip well. Their aim is to give people with little or no sailing background a taste of life under sail, without needing a boat or a licence of their own. The business runs one yacht, Solitaire, a Catalina 320 Mk II that is rated for ocean use. Every booking is exclusive, so the boat and crew are yours for the charter, with room for up to nine guests. Below deck there is a galley with an oven, cooktop and microwave, sleeping space for four and a television, which makes the overnight packages possible. Charters leave from Marina YE, close to 100 Lorimer Street in Docklands. A typical outing heads down the lower Yarra past the port, then out across Hobsons Bay. Shorter sails take in Williamstown and Port Melbourne, while longer ones reach St Kilda, Brighton, Sandringham or Point Cook. Pick-ups and drop-offs can also be arranged at Williamstown, Port Melbourne or along the river. Packages cover two- and three-hour skippered sails, a sunset proposal cruise, a sail with an overnight stay and breakfast on board, a day trip to Royal Brighton Yacht Club for lunch, and a 31 December cruise to watch the Docklands fireworks. Guests can help trim sails and steer or leave it all to the crew, and a reasonable amount of BYO alcohol is allowed at the skipper's discretion. If the weather turns, the charter is moved to another day or refunded.

Frequently asked questions
How many people can join a Sail Melbourne Charters sail?
Solitaire takes a maximum of nine guests plus two crew, so it suits small birthday groups, couples and close friends rather than large parties.
Do we need sailing experience?
No. A skipper and crew run every charter. Guests can lend a hand with steering and sails under supervision, or simply relax and enjoy the bay while the crew does the work.
Can we bring drinks on board?
Yes. A reasonable amount of BYO alcohol, such as champagne for a celebration, is permitted on charters at the skipper's discretion.
Where does the yacht leave from?
Charters depart Marina YE near 100 Lorimer Street, Docklands, opposite the ANZ headquarters. Pick-ups and drop-offs can also be arranged at Williamstown, Port Melbourne or points along the Yarra.
What happens if the weather is bad?
If conditions are unsuitable, whether you or the crew are uneasy about them, the charter is postponed to another day or fully refunded, whichever you prefer.

It has always been my bucket list to be on a sail when I turn 40. To my surprise, my husband had planned this and liaise with Dean And Pam few months prior in secret! They totally made our day nothing but exceptional war…
