About Classic Steamboat Cruises
Classic Steamboat Cruises is a family-owned riverboat operator that has worked from the Southbank waterfront since 2002. Owner Hamish Turner looks after the boats himself, answers the enquiry line and often skippers the charters, so the outings keep a personal, unhurried feel. The fleet is two timber vessels built in the traditional way. MV Grower is a 1924 ferry the Turner family restored over several years; it has saloon bench seating and an open aft deck that comes into its own in warm weather, and takes up to 30 guests on a private booking. MV Eureka is a launch styled on 1930s art deco design and built by Hamish with two shipwrights, seating 28 on forward couches, side seats and a curved bench at the stern. Both boats are covered for their full capacity, with outdoor space when the sun is out. Private hire is available every day of the week, morning or evening. Groups use the boats for birthdays, wedding parties, corporate functions and river transfers, and charters can start from several points along the river rather than only the home berth. Guests are welcome to bring their own drinks and food, and the team can also organise catering, decorations and entertainment. Charters cruise the Yarra in either direction: upstream past the parklands, sporting precincts and gardens towards Richmond and South Yarra, or downstream under the low city bridges, past South Wharf and into Docklands. Race-day groups can also be taken along the Maribyrnong to Flemington Racecourse.

Frequently asked questions
How many guests can Classic Steamboat Cruises take on a private charter?
MV Grower carries up to 30 passengers on a private booking, and MV Eureka seats 28, so the operator suits smaller parties rather than very large functions.
What does a private charter cost?
The charter page lists $475 + GST per hour for up to 20 guests and $495 + GST per hour for 21 to 30 guests on bookings of two hours or more. A one-hour booking is charged at $495 per hour. Captain and crew are included.
Can we bring our own food and drinks on board?
Yes. The operator welcomes BYO, and guests can bring a picnic on board. If you would rather not organise it yourself, the team can arrange catering for the cruise.
Where do charters leave from?
The boats are based at Berth 3 on the Southbank promenade near Southgate, but private charters can depart from a number of points along the river to suit your plans.
What happens if it rains on the day?
Both riverboats have enough covered seating for their full capacity, so a shower will not leave guests exposed, and the open deck areas are there for fine weather.
