About The Cool Space Escape Rooms
Run by friends Josh and Daniel, The Cool Space is a small, independent Chippendale studio for escape games. Both founders worked as game masters at other venues before opening it. Between them they have played well over 220 rooms, and they make everything themselves: Josh writes the stories, designs the graphics and handles the technology, while Daniel builds the sets and the hidden mechanisms behind them. There are two games, each running for an hour. Sweethearts casts your group as staff from a struggling ice cream shop who break into a rival parlour after dark to find out what makes its product so good. It takes two to eight players, three to five is the sweet spot, and it rates high on difficulty but low on fright, with fog, flashing lights and loud sound effects. Seance is a seated game in which the team tries to win the trust of a spirit in an old mansion; it takes two to six, uses live actors and jump scares, and isn't recommended for anyone under 16. Actors never touch players. Every booking is private, and a gamemaster looks after each group one-on-one with as many hints as you need. Lockers are provided, and each player takes home a collectable enamel pin. Larger groups such as university clubs, work teams or birthday crowds can run both games together by arranging times with the studio. The venue sits close to UTS, the University of Sydney and Notre Dame, and it is reached by stairs, so it isn't wheelchair accessible.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to play?
Groups of three to eight pay $65 a person, and a pair pays $70 a person. Players under 16 must have an adult with them for the whole game.
Can a large group play at the same time?
Yes. Sweethearts takes up to eight and Seance up to six, so bigger groups can book both games at once. Contact the studio to line up the time slots.
Are the games scary?
Sweethearts has a low fear rating but uses fog, flashing lights and loud noises. Seance is designed to scare, with live actors and jump scares, and suits players 16 and over.
Where do we park?
Parking on the main road is limited. Vine Street and Hudson Street in Redfern have free two-hour spots and some all-day parking, a short walk from the entrance on Cleveland Street.
Can we cancel or reschedule?
Give at least 48 hours' notice to move or cancel a booking. If fewer players turn up, the price is adjusted to the new bracket, but groups need a minimum of two players.
