About Old Cheese Factory
The Old Cheese Factory sits on Homestead Road in Berwick, on grounds that include the 1860s Springfield Homestead, the original cheese factory and a kitchen wash house. The City of Casey manages the site, which also has gardens, a large playground, BBQ areas and a daytime café. Several rooms can be hired for private events. The Multi-Purpose Room seats 100 and comes with a semi-commercial kitchen, a projector and screen and a built-in sound system. The Chapel, once a church in Mount Waverley, takes 50 seated or 80 standing and has a small fixed stage. For smaller groups, the Old Shop and the Springfield Room each seat 30 or hold 50 standing, and both come with a kitchenette. The Cheese Factory Upper Level suits daytime gatherings of up to 40, though it is reached by an outside staircase and alcohol isn't allowed there. Outdoors, the Lacebark Lawn, the Middle Paddock and a gazebo with a BBQ can be booked, and the paddock is used for engagement parties, receptions and gala dinners. Wedding packages cover garden ceremonies and receptions in the Chapel, the Multi-Purpose Room or the meadow, for 20 to 400 guests. Food is arranged by the hirer, either brought in or supplied by a caterer, who needs public liability insurance. Alcohol can be served within the room or space you have booked, and a liquor licence is needed only if drinks are sold. Rooms are set with tables and chairs to your floor plan, and access is limited to your booked hours, so allow time to set up and pack down. Frequently asked questions
How many guests can the Old Cheese Factory hold?
It depends on the space. The Multi-Purpose Room seats 100, the Chapel takes 50 seated or 80 standing, and the Old Shop and Springfield Room each seat 30 or hold 50 standing. Wedding packages across the grounds range from 20 guests up to 400.
How much does it cost to hire a room?
The Old Shop and Springfield Room are $217 for three hours or $345 for six, the Chapel is $302 or $486, and the Multi-Purpose Room is $750 for six hours. Private events add a $15 public liability fee, and a bond of $350 or $1,000 applies depending on the function.
Can we bring our own food and alcohol?
Yes. You can bring food or engage a caterer, who will need to show proof of public liability cover, and the Admin Kitchen can be added for $49 an hour. Alcohol may be consumed in the room or space you've hired, and selling drinks requires a liquor licence.
What times can the rooms be booked?
Three-hour sessions run 10am to 1pm, 2pm to 5pm or 6pm to 9pm, and six-hour sessions run 10am to 4pm or 6pm to midnight. The Multi-Purpose Room is offered as a six-hour booking, and the Upper Level is available for daytime hire only.
Are there rules on decorations?
Confetti, rice, artificial petals and gender reveal poppers aren't allowed anywhere on the site. Unsecured balloons are also banned, so weighted balloons or alternatives such as bunting and paper decorations are the way to go.
