About Champainting South Melbourne
Champainting runs BYO paint and sip sessions from a ground-floor corner studio at 206 Clarendon Street in South Melbourne. Each guest sits at an easel with a 40 x 50 cm canvas, brushes and an apron, and one of the studio's artists leads the room through the chosen artwork stroke by stroke. Nobody needs to have painted before – the steps are pitched at complete beginners, and there is room to add your own touches along the way. The drinks and food are yours to bring. Guests turn up with wine, bubbles, beer or something non-alcoholic plus snacks or a grazing box, and the studio has wine glasses, champagne flutes, tumblers, tapas plates, bottle openers and a fridge ready. Public sessions run most evenings and on weekend afternoons, including UV glow-in-the-dark nights and Paint Your Mate sessions where you paint a portrait of the person beside you. For celebrations, the studio takes private bookings for hens and bridal showers, birthdays, baby showers, Christmas parties and team building. The standard setup seats 42 across three long tables and one smaller one. Private studio parties are priced per guest with minimum spends that vary by date and group size, and a $500 deposit holds the date outside June and December. Your group can choose a painting from the gallery or ask for a custom design, and everyone leaves with their finished canvas. The site is wheelchair accessible at ground level, though the bathroom is not.

No. Sessions are designed for first-timers. An artist demonstrates each stage of the painting and the group follows along, so everyone finishes with their own canvas to take home.
How long does a private event run?
A private studio event runs for 2.5 hours including arrival, mingling and painting. Staying longer can be arranged when the studio is free, at $120 for each extra 30 minutes.
