Ashley Barnett is a Melbourne comedy magician who has spent more than ten years performing at children's birthday parties around the city. Weekends are mostly backyard and lounge-room parties, while weekdays bring school shows and corporate functions. For children's parties there are two shows. The deluxe version brings a cast of animals – doves, a rabbit, a guinea pig and a fluffy chicken – and the birthday child opens by producing a dove from a handkerchief and closes by turning one into a white hen. At the end kids can pat the rabbit and hold a dove. The classic show leaves the animals at home, which suits smaller spaces and venues with a no-animals rule. Balloon animals and a hands-on magic workshop can be added to either show. For adults, Ashley mostly works as a roving close-up magician, moving between small groups as they mingle, and this suits gatherings of around 40 guests or more. Intimate soirees can book a parlour show for up to about 40 people that mixes sleight of hand, psychology and mind reading, and big crowds get a high-energy comedy stage act. He also performs as Dwayne Robbins, a mock motivational speaker who does magic, and gives talks on the psychology of deception. His acts need very little set-up, so they slot easily into a run sheet.
