About Amazing Ashley
Ashley Barnett has been doing magic since he was nine, when a magic book and cape turned up for Christmas, and he has spent more than ten years performing comedy magic at Melbourne birthday parties. He also teaches critical thinking at university level, which he folds into school shows and lectures about how magic fools the mind. His children's show puts the birthday child in charge. The first trick has them produce a dove from a handkerchief, and the finale has them turn a dove into a fluffy white hen. The deluxe version features doves, a guinea pig, a rabbit and the hen, and once the show wraps up the kids get to pat the animals and hold a dove – a good moment for photos. A classic show without animals suits smaller rooms and venues that don't allow them, and balloon animals or a magic workshop can be added. Routines are interactive so every child gets involved, and parents tend to enjoy the tricks just as much. For adult functions he mostly performs close-up roving magic, walking between small groups during the mingling or canapé part of the evening; roving suits events of 40 or more guests. Smaller soirees can have a parlour show for up to about 40 people, mixing sleight of hand, psychology, mind reading and comedy, while large family celebrations and corporate events can book a comedy stage act. He also performs a character act, Dwayne Robbins the motivational magician, as a comic fake speaker. Past performances include an RACV Club Christmas Day lunch, a Father's Day function at the National Gallery of Victoria and the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne's opening night.

Frequently asked questions
What happens in the kids' birthday show?
The birthday child becomes the magician, producing a dove at the start and turning a dove into a hen at the end. Every child takes part, and in the deluxe show they can pat the animals and hold a dove afterwards.
Is there a show without animals?
Yes. The classic magic show leaves the animals out and suits smaller spaces or venues that don't allow animals. The deluxe show with doves, a rabbit, a guinea pig and a hen is the more popular choice.
What does Ashley offer for adult functions?
Close-up roving magic for events of 40 or more guests, a parlour show with mind reading for groups of up to about 40, and a comedy stage act for large celebrations and corporate events.
Can Ashley perform at a wedding or hens party?
Yes. He performs at weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, hens parties and other family celebrations, and can often tailor an act to suit the occasion after a chat about your plans.
How much setup does he need?
His acts are designed to need very little setup, so they slot easily into an event's running order. He works with the organiser beforehand to plan where the magic fits in the evening.
