About The Tea Rooms 1892

The Tea Rooms 1892 have poured tea in the Block Arcade on Collins Street since the 1890s, when a women's charity group served tea beneath the arcade's dome before shifting into the shops it still fills. The room keeps that period feel, with emerald patterned wallpaper, an etched mirror and cake cabinets in the front window, while the arcade outside has a glass roof and mosaic floors. High tea arrives on a three-tiered stand, made by the kitchen on the morning of each booking. The savoury tier takes in quiche Lorraine, a vegetarian quiche, roast beef sandwiches on dark rye with horseradish mayonnaise, smoked salmon pinwheels and chicken liver pâté with chestnut biscuits. Above it come the house petits fours, fresh fruit and berries, and freshly baked scones with triple berry jam and double cream. Every guest also gets a choice of tea, coffee, soft drink or juice, and the tea rooms are licensed, so wine or bubbles can be added. Sittings start at 9am, 11am, 1pm and 3pm and last two hours. Up to eight guests can book online, and larger parties or other times are arranged by emailing the team, which makes it a good fit for milestone birthdays, bridal and baby showers, or a family outing with grandparents. Children up to 10 have their own price, as long as each child is booked with an adult. Gluten-free, vegetarian and pescatarian stands are available, but vegan, dairy-free and halal requests cannot be met. Full payment is taken when you book, and bookings close at 4pm the day before.

Very good Afternoon Tea in Melbourne! Food is the best we’ve had of any Tea Room in Australia, with the only downside being the jam served with the scones being bottled jam and not freshly made jam. Excellent service, be…
