About Afternoon Tea at The Hotel Windsor
The Hotel Windsor opened on Spring St in 1883 and is one of the few grand Victorian hotels still operating, facing Parliament House next to the Princess Theatre in the Melbourne CBD. Afternoon tea has long been part of its identity, and it is served in the One Eleven dining room from Wednesday to Sunday, starting at noon. Each booking is a two-hour sitting at a table set with tiered stands, specialty teas and coffee. On weekdays it is the classic service; at weekends the price rises and a dessert buffet with a chocolate fountain is added. Children aged 12 and under get their own stand, built around nostalgic local flavours such as Golden Gaytime, Wagon Wheels and Vegemite, which makes it easy to bring the whole family. The pastry team can prepare vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free stands, and stands suited to pregnancy, if you note it when booking, though the kitchen handles nuts and can't guarantee a nut-free stand. The dress code is smart casual, so leave the sportswear and thongs at home. For a celebration with just your own guests, the hotel hosts private afternoon tea parties, suiting birthdays, anniversaries, bridal and baby showers and other milestones. These are held in one of two heritage dining rooms: a chandeliered room with gilt-framed art and an antique mirror for up to 80, or the Winston Room, the hotel's original dining room with tall windows, for up to 50. Private parties start with a glass of French sparkling wine, followed by canapés, ribbon sandwiches, patisserie and scones with jam and cream on silver stands, with waiters looking after your table. Reservations open 150 days ahead.

Frequently asked questions
How much is afternoon tea at The Hotel Windsor?
Weekday afternoon tea is $89 for adults and $59 for children, with a $69 seniors rate Wednesday to Friday for Seniors Card holders. At weekends it is $119 for adults and $79 for children, including the dessert buffet and chocolate fountain. Public holidays carry a 15% surcharge.
Can we book a private afternoon tea for a bridal or baby shower?
Yes. Private afternoon tea parties are held in one of two heritage dining rooms, seating up to 80 or up to 50, with French sparkling on arrival, canapés, sandwiches, patisserie and scones, plus tea and coffee. Contact the events team for details.
How long is an afternoon tea sitting?
Each reservation is for a two-hour sitting, after which the table is needed for the next guests. Afternoon tea is served Wednesday to Sunday from noon, and bookings open 150 days in advance, so plan ahead for weekend dates.
Do you cater for dietary requirements?
Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free afternoon teas are available, and stands can be adjusted for pregnant guests. Note any allergy or dietary need when you book. The kitchen uses nuts, so a completely nut-free stand cannot be guaranteed.
What is the dress code and cancellation policy?
Dress is smart casual: no sportswear, flip-flops or non-tailored shorts. Changes and cancellations need 48 hours' notice; a late cancellation or no-show costs $50 per guest, charged to the card held with the booking.
