About Old Man Drew
Old Man Drew is a café and fine food store in a building on Mount Alexander Road in Ascot Vale that dates back to 1868, when it opened as a grocery. The Drew family, who have owned it since the late 1960s, restored it into a café with a leafy vintage garden, a bluestone wine cellar and a dedicated high tea room called Miss Violets Tea Rooms. The tea room is dressed for the occasion: Royal Albert china, crystal chandeliers, crisp white tablecloths, fresh flowers, comfortable chairs and an open fireplace, in a bright, air-conditioned room that works in any season. High tea is a two-hour sitting from 3pm to 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays. It opens with a glass of champagne, then brings a seasonal mix of hot and cold savouries, including ribbon sandwiches and the family's sausage rolls, followed by scones with house-made raspberry jam and whipped cream, small cakes, petit fours and chocolates. English breakfast tea is served throughout, with coffee and herbal teas available for an extra charge. The high tea is $110 a head and must be paid when booking. There is no minimum group size, and the café takes larger group bookings and private events in the rooms, which makes it a natural fit for bridal and baby showers, hens afternoons and milestone birthdays. Gluten-free, vegan and other dietary needs can be catered for if the café is told 48 hours ahead, for an extra $10. The tea room is fully licensed, with wines and classic cocktails available on request, and bookings are taken by phone or online.
