About Urban Salsa

Urban Salsa is a Latin dance school based at Rosehill Bowling Club, a short hop from the Parramatta CBD. It is run by instructor Raymund, who has spent more than two decades teaching and performing salsa, cha cha cha, bachata and merengue in Australia and abroad. His classes put the basics first, and the aim is to get students comfortable enough to join a social dance floor quickly. For a hens do, birthday or small team outing, the most useful option is a private lesson. Groups of three to ten book an hour with an instructor, who shapes the lesson around the group's experience and pace, in the style of your choice: salsa On1 or On2, Cuban salsa, bachata or cha cha cha. Lessons can be held at your home if there is space to dance, with travel costs possibly added, or in a studio booked for the occasion, with the hire charge added to the fee. Lessons are paid in advance, and a change of time needs 24 hours' notice. The regular public classes run on Sunday evenings in the club's function room, which has a large timber dance floor, across five-week terms that follow the NSW school terms. Salsa On1 is taught in three levels, with workshops in other styles, and a trial class lets newcomers test the waters first. Nobody needs to bring a partner. The club has onsite parking, is close to bus and light rail stops, and serves food and drinks before and after class, and the school also runs social dance nights there that start with a short workshop.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a private group lesson?

A private lesson for a group of three to ten people is $299 an hour. One person pays $129 an hour and a couple $159 an hour, and every lesson is paid for in advance.

Can the instructor come to us?

Yes. Private lessons can run at your home if there is enough room to dance, though travel costs may apply. A studio can also be booked, with the studio hire added to the lesson fee.

Which dance styles can we learn?

Private lessons can cover salsa On1, salsa On2, Cuban salsa, bachata or cha cha cha. Weekly group classes focus on salsa On1, and the other styles are taught through workshops.

Do we need a partner or any experience?

Neither. Many students come alone, and partners rotate during class so everyone learns to lead and follow. Beginners courses start from the very first step.

What should we wear?

Casual, breathable clothes and shoes that stay firmly on your feet. Sneakers are fine for beginners, but high heels and sandals are not recommended.
