About Wine D Road Tours

Wine D Road Tours is a small Hunter Valley operation built around one guide, Dan Brown, and a single air-conditioned bus that carries no more than 13 people. The point of difference is that it is a guided tour rather than a shuttle: Dan comes inside at each stop, talks through the history of the area and the wineries, and stays with the group for the whole day instead of waiting in the car park. Every tour visits four or five boutique wineries chosen on the day, with structured private tastings booked in advance and a staff member set aside for the group. Tasting fees are part of the price. There is no fixed list of cellar doors, because the itinerary follows whatever experiences are on offer that day, such as barrel tastings or a chance to meet the winemaker. Lunch at a restaurant is always included, along with a glass of wine, a beer or a soft drink, and the afternoon takes in local cheese and chocolate. Pick-up and drop-off happen at your accommodation, with surcharges possible outside the Pokolbin, Cessnock, Rothbury, Branxton and Maitland areas, and visitors arriving by train can be met at Maitland station. Wine bought during the day is labelled with your name and stored on the bus until you are dropped back. Tours run all year in any weather, with a minimum of two guests. The shared format suits couples and small groups of friends celebrating a birthday or anniversary, while larger parties can arrange a private tour at an added cost. Children are only taken on private bookings, since wineries are licensed premises. The business is also linked to Cadair Cottage, a romantic stay with an outdoor spa, offered with the tour as a package.

Pricing

The standard guided tour is $210 per person and covers accommodation pick-up and drop-off, four or five wineries with private tastings, all tasting fees, a restaurant lunch with one drink, and a cheese and chocolate stop. Full payment secures the seats. Trip protection can be added for 10% of the tour price, allowing changes or cancellation up to 30 minutes before the start; without it there are no refunds. Private tours and pick-ups outside the core areas cost extra.

Fleet & Booking Details

Tours run in one air-conditioned bus seating up to 13 passengers, filled from several bookings so couples and small groups travel together. Your guide drives, walks into each winery with the group and leads the conversation through the tastings. Seats are booked online or by phone with Visa, Mastercard or Amex, and the enquiry form asks for your date, pick-up address and number of seats. A completely private tour for two or more is available at an added cost. Bottles bought during the day are named and stored on board, and most wineries can ship wine directly.

Frequently asked questions

How many people go on a Wine D Road tour?

The bus is filled from several bookings up to a total of 13 guests, so the group stays small. A tour runs with as few as two people, and a group of two or more can book the bus privately for an extra charge.

What does the $210 tour price include?

Collection from and return to your accommodation, four or five wineries with pre-booked private tastings, all tasting fees, a restaurant lunch with a glass of wine, beer or soft drink, and a stop for local cheese and chocolate.

Can we choose which wineries we visit?

Not on the guided tour. The guide picks small wineries known for good service and extras on the day. Groups who want their own list of cellar doors are better off booking a shuttle rather than a guided tour.

Where can we be picked up from?

From your accommodation in the Pokolbin, Cessnock, Rothbury, Branxton and Maitland areas, with a surcharge possible further out. There are no transfers from outside the Hunter, but guests can catch the train to Maitland and be collected from the station.

Can children come on the tour?

Children are not taken on the shared tour because wineries are licensed venues. If you have no choice but to bring them, book a private tour instead.
