Eden Yarra Valley hands the groom's mates a whole property behind its own gates, on Steels Creek Road at the edge of Yarra Glen. Tall hedges close in two acres of lawns, ponds and rose beds, and every event is approved by application for a group of up to 30.

Much of the lower valley's function trade runs through winery restaurants on its two main highways, booked for a lunch or an evening. Eden works differently: the group takes over the estate itself and sets its own timetable, from breakfast to the pool closing at 10pm.

What the groom's crew has to work with:

• Games – a recreation room with a pool table, foosball and an arcade machine
• Two bars – a guest bar with its own tables, stools and commercial drinks fridge, opening onto a deck with a second bar outside
• A swim – the pool, heated by solar and open until 10pm
• Room to eat together – house dining tables for 22 and an undercover deck seating up to 28
• Potter's Gallery – a timber-lined private room with long tables for a seated dinner or a cocktail night
