Hire A Mermaid began in Sydney in 2019, when a group of friends met at a local mer-meet and bonded over mermaiding, the art of swimming in a mermaid tail. Members of the public kept stopping them for photos and asking whether they could be booked, and the business grew from there. The founder holds a Bachelor of Education covering birth to 12 years, and each event is shaped around the children's ages, abilities and safety. There are three main party formats, each typically running for an hour with the option to extend, and each mermaid looks after up to 12 children. Pool parties take place in a backyard or public pool, with photos, mermaid questions and answers, tricks, and games such as Marco Polo and hide and seek with pool sinkers. Beach pop-ups have the mermaid waiting to be discovered on the sand, followed by stories, photos and a swim. Land parties suit homes and halls, with storytime, ocean facts, face glitter, colouring, craft and games like charades and musical statues. Custom experiences are also available, such as swimming alongside a mermaid, and the team supplies mermaid talent for corporate events, promotions, campaigns and public events.
