About Hot Potato Band
Hot Potato Band is a Sydney brass-pop band that started in 2009, when founder Simon Ghali pulled together a group of friends to play a south coast wine festival that had no electricity. With only brass and percussion, and inspired by New Orleans street bands, they kept the crowd there all afternoon, and the band's interactive, anything-goes style has stuck ever since. Since then they have released albums of original music and taken their show on tour through Europe, the Middle East, New Zealand and around Australia. For private and corporate clients the band offers roaming shows. Because the players need no amplification, they can move through a crowd, start in a courtyard and finish on the dance floor, or greet guests as they arrive. The line-up is built around drums and percussion, baritone, tenor and alto saxophones, trumpet and trombone, fronted by a vocalist. Sets mix punchy brass versions of popular dance songs with the band's own tunes, and the players get guests involved with call-and-response singing, conga lines and even limbo. Roaming bookings cover weddings, corporate entertainment, private events, sports matches and street parades. The band also runs a separate schools program with workshops and concerts led by members who are trained music teachers. Pricing is quoted per event through the booking form on the band's website, which asks for the date, location and details of the event.
