SteelCityBooths is Amani Boudan's photo booth hire business in Kotara, and Newcastle is its home patch. Weddings, milestone birthdays, school formals and work functions across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie make up most bookings, and since travel costs nothing for venues up to 100 kilometres from Newcastle, venues from the harbour to the southern end of the lake cost the same. The booth also travels further, anywhere in NSW, including to the Hunter Valley. Booking is kept simple with one package. You get three hours of booth time with instant prints, photos sent to guests by text, a strip designed around your event, a backdrop you choose and an online gallery of every frame afterwards. Each strip shows three photos one above the other, and a line underneath for your names, the date, the venue or a logo, and guests can print as many as they like. The kit is a Canon EOS M50 with eye-tracking autofocus, a professional flash and a dye-sublimation printer. Every hire includes an attendant, who arrives roughly two hours before opening to set up, then passes around props and coaxes shy guests in front of the camera before packing down at the end. Allow an area of about 3 by 3 metres; upstairs rooms are fine, and outdoor spots work if they are under cover. Cold spark fountains are a separate package, and guest books come in white and gold, timber or white, with gold and silver Sharpies so guests can leave a message next to their strip. The business holds public liability insurance.

Do they charge travel to Newcastle or Lake Macquarie venues?
No. SteelCityBooths is based in Kotara and there is no travel cost for venues within 100 kilometres of Newcastle, which covers the city and all of Lake Macquarie. Anything further is quoted by location.
What does the photo booth cost?
Three hours of booth time costs $650, and extra hours are $100 each. If you would like the booth set up and waiting before guests can use it, that idle time is $50 an hour.
What comes with the booking?
An attendant, props, unlimited instant prints, a strip designed for your event, photos sent by text, a backdrop you pick and a gallery online with all the photos once the night wraps up.
How much space should we leave for the booth?
Plan for roughly 3 by 3 metres. The booth can go upstairs, and outdoors too, provided there is shelter to keep sun and rain off the equipment.
How is payment handled?
A non-refundable 50 per cent booking fee holds your date. The remainder is paid by bank transfer or credit card no later than two weeks before the event.
