School Formal Venues in Melbourne's Western Suburbs

Choosing the Right School Formal Venue

Year 12 formals in the west tend to land in purpose-built reception centres, where a whole year group, its teachers and a DJ all fit in one room with a dance floor. Both of the region's formal venues work that way – Lakeside Banquet & Convention Centre at 65 Melton Hwy, Taylors Lakes, and Sheldon Reception at 608-614 Somerville Rd, Sunshine West – and both count school functions among their regular events.

Weighing the two for a formal committee:

Year-group numbers: the Lakeview Ballroom at Lakeside fits a cohort of 230 to 650, the Bliss Ballroom at Sheldon 220 to 600.
Smaller cohorts: Lakeside's Wellington Room suits 60 to 170 with its own dance floor and band stage, and Sheldon's Delphinium Room 70 to 240.
Making an entrance: Lakeside's ballroom opens with a double staircase, and the Delphinium Room has a staircase of its own.
Seating with a view: the Bliss Ballroom rings its polished dance floor with tiered perimeter seating.
Drop-off and pick-up: complimentary on-site parking at Lakeside and on-site parking at Sheldon.

Lakeside Banquet & Convention Centre's prices start from $85 per person; Sheldon Reception prices each event on enquiry, with a dedicated event manager for every booking.

Menus: Sheldon's in-house kitchen does canapés, buffets and three-course sit-down menus, while Lakeside can serve anything between cocktail food and a plated dinner, halal included.
Timing: a Sheldon booking covers five and a half hours, and the DJ wraps up at midnight.
Lighting: Lakeside's Wellington Room has stage lighting over its dance floor.
Comfort: Sheldon's Delphinium Room is air conditioned and has a fully serviced bar.

Organising the formal committee

One contact: Sheldon gives each booking a dedicated event manager, and Lakeside has its own event coordinators.
Outdoors: Lakeside's garden has gazebos and fountains beside the lake and takes up to 100 guests.
Caterer choice: Lakeside room-hire bookings can bring in a registered outside caterer.
Décor: Lakeside can arrange Tiffany chairs and centrepieces, and Sheldon's rooms come already finished with chandeliers and a mirrored wall.
