About Interlace Costume Shop

Interlace is a fancy dress and costume hire shop in Dee Why that has been part of the Northern Beaches for more than 30 years. It started out in Mona Vale and moved to its current Howard Avenue shopfront in 2007. The racks cover themes from the 1920s through to the 1990s, plus heroes and villains, pirates, Oktoberfest, circus, medieval, military, horror and Book Week characters for adults and children. The shop's approach is to fit you in person. You try costumes on, staff suggest pieces to finish the look, and a hire comes with the accessories that make it work, from boots and hats to boas and wigs. If you already have a theme, a couples idea or a letter-of-the-alphabet party, the team can suggest options, and anything they can't show online is usually waiting in store. Costumes are also available to buy, along with face paint, special-effects make-up and other extras. Hiring suits one-off events: a 30th with a decade theme, a Christmas party, a group going as characters from the same film, or a school dress-up day. A hire normally runs for several days, you return it during opening hours, and Interlace takes care of the cleaning. A security deposit applies to every hire, roughly twice the hire charge, taken as a credit card imprint or as cash or EFTPOS that is refunded on return. If you can't get to Dee Why during the week, orders can be arranged by phone.

Interlace publishes a hire guide: full adult costumes from $55, children's full costumes from $35, suits from $55, jackets from $35, tails from $50 and wigs from $20. Shoes and boots are $10 to $30, the minimum clothing hire is $15 and the minimum accessory hire is $10. A final quote is given once you've picked your costume, and a security deposit of about twice the hire applies.

The usual hire period is several days, or as agreed, and items go back during trading hours; late fees may apply. Loss, damage or excessive soiling is charged at a fair rate set by the owner, and all items remain the property of Interlace.

Is there a deposit on costume hire?

Yes. Every hire needs a security deposit of about double the hire price. The shop's preference is to take an imprint of your credit card; nothing is charged and the imprint is destroyed once the costume is back. Debit cards aren't accepted for the imprint, so without a credit card you can leave cash or EFTPOS, which is refunded on return.

How long can I keep the costume?

A hire usually covers several days, or a period agreed with the shop. Costumes need to be returned during trading hours unless you've arranged otherwise, and late fees can apply. Loss, damage or heavy soiling is charged at a fair rate.

When is the Dee Why shop open?

Interlace is at 5/20 Howard Avenue, Dee Why. It opens 10am to 5pm Tuesday to Friday and 10am to 4pm on Saturday, and is closed on Sunday, Monday and public holidays.

Can I order a costume without coming in?

The shop recommends trying costumes on in person so the fit and look are right, but if you can't get there during opening hours you can place an order over the phone.
