The Wardrobe Costumiers has been hiring costumes out of Chatswood since 1968, which makes it one of the longest-running costume shops in Sydney. It is a walk-in shop rather than a mail-order operation: you come to 312A High Street, talk to staff who know the collection, and get fitted on the spot. The stock is built around lovingly preserved vintage garments, unique hand-made clothing and rare historical replicas rather than throw-away online costumes, and the shop puts its weight on size range, historical accuracy and getting a character's details right. There are two sides to the business. Fancy dress hire covers parties, themed nights and one-off dress-ups, and runs for seven days from pick-up; there are thousands of costumes to choose from, and staff will style and accessorise a look you have already half-built at home. Theatrical hire covers whole productions for stage, film and television, where the shop works to a director's creative direction and measures every cast member, and may be eligible for special rates. Productions are asked for about six weeks of lead time so the research and fitting can be done properly, and a measurement guide and sheet can be downloaded beforehand. Standard cleaning is included in the hire fee, so costumes go back as worn; late returns, damage or excessive dirt attract extra charges. Bookings open up to six weeks ahead, and a holding fee of $50 per costume secures the date, coming off the balance at pick-up. Hirers must be 18 or over and present photo identification and a valid credit or debit card. The shop trades Monday to Saturday from 10am, with a late night on Thursday until 7pm, and is closed Sundays and public holidays.

What does it cost to hire a costume?
The minimum hire fee is $50. Full costumes generally range from $120 to $180, and the more elaborate outfits are $200 to $250. Standard cleaning is included in the fee.
How long is the hire period?
Fancy dress hire is for seven days from pick-up. If a costume comes back late, damaged or excessively dirty, additional charges apply.
How far ahead should I book?
Bookings can be made up to six weeks in advance, and a holding fee of $50 per costume is paid at the time of booking. For a stage or screen production the shop asks for about six weeks of lead time so every cast member can be measured.
