Character Costumes is a Sydney costume maker and hire business that has been building mascots and character suits since 1995. Most of its work is made to order for councils, schools, sporting clubs, charities, brands and film and TV, and the workshop has turned out everything from kangaroos, magpies and teddy bears to walking microphones and wheelie bins. Alongside the custom work it keeps a hire range of fancy dress costumes and mascot suits, rented from its shopfront on Parramatta Road in Petersham. The mascot hire list includes a koala, rabbit, teddy bear, watermelon, astronaut, Donkey Kong and Sesame Street-style characters, which suits a children's party, a school fete, a club day or an Easter event. The fancy dress racks run from A to Z: Cleopatra, Elvis, Batman and Batgirl, Ghostbusters, Harley Quinn, Jack Sparrow, Mad Hatter, Marie Antoinette, Roman centurions, Top Gun, Spice Girls and several 1920s Gatsby dresses, among many others. If a popular style isn't in stock, the team may be able to source or make it. A standard hire lasts four days, typically collected on a Friday and returned on the Monday, and the shop does the laundering. You'll need a driver's licence or other ID, a mobile number and email, and a credit card pre-authorisation or cash bond. The shop is open 9am to 5pm on weekdays, or by appointment.
