Escape Room Options Across Inner North

How Escape Rooms Actually Work

Spy films and science fiction are the reference points for The Curium Experience, the inner north's story-led escape game on Cromwell Street in Collingwood – the suburb on the eastern side of Smith Street from Fitzroy. Its single mission, Extraction, has teams breaking into a guarded lab across several levels of a converted warehouse.

Worth knowing before you choose it:

  • One immersive mission rather than a menu of themed rooms.
  • Prices from $49 per person.
  • Physical by escape-room standards, with stairs and a low tunnel to crawl.
  • Teams of two to seven, with larger groups starting in waves.
  • A licensed lounge on site for drinks after the game.

For an inner-north birthday or bucks afternoon, that lounge means the debrief and the first round happen under one roof before you head on to Smith Street or beyond.

Planning a group mission

  • Book teams of about four for the smoothest game; seven is the limit per team.
  • Eight or more players are split into teams that begin half an hour apart.
  • Allow around 90 minutes per team, including briefing, team photo and debrief.
  • Wave starts let teams compare time and score at the end.

Is it the right fit?

  • First-time players – the difficulty is pitched at a moderate level.
  • Groups happy to move, since the mission involves stairs and crawling.
  • Teen players aged 8 to 16 with two adults on their team; no under-eights.
  • Wheelchair users should note the game isn't wheelchair accessible.

Escape Rooms, Explained

Where is the inner north's escape room?

The Curium Experience is at 28 Cromwell St, Collingwood, inside an old warehouse.

What is the Extraction mission?

Teams start in the clubrooms of a fictional society, pass through a portal device called The Machine and must steal an artefact from a guarded lab, played out over several levels with sets, lighting and effects.

Is it safe for nervous players?

Doors are never locked, every room has an emergency exit and a game master watches each team on CCTV. Most physical parts can be skipped on request.

Can we have drinks after the game?

Yes – the licensed Recovery Lounge serves packaged drinks and snacks while the game master goes over each team's result.
