About Woodlands Trail Riding
Woodlands Trail Riding operates from Woodlands Lodge in Oaklands Junction, on the city's northern rural fringe. Its guided tours wind through farmland paddocks, and from the higher ground riders take in a full circle of views – the city towers, the bay, the Great Dividing Range and the airport terminal. Alongside trail rides, the team runs riding lessons, led pony rides and equine assisted activities. Groups are a big part of the business. Woodlands takes private and group bookings for special occasions, birthday parties and corporate events, and offers group rates – email the bookings team with your numbers and plans. Riders range from complete beginners to experienced hands, and each person is paired with a pony or horse suited to their size, weight and ability. Trail rides are open from age seven with an adult's authorisation, while pony rides cater for children aged two to seven. There is a 95kg weight limit for ridden activities, with a few horses able to carry up to 100kg by arrangement. Riders need long pants and flat, enclosed shoes or boots; helmets are supplied and compulsory. Tour and birthday groups arrive 30 minutes early to sign waivers, get fitted and watch a demonstration. Phones stay away while mounted, but instructors take photos and video that you can download afterwards. Rides go ahead in light rain, and if conditions are unsafe the team offers a new date or a credit. There is no shuttle – the closest public transport points are the airport and the Sunbury and Broadmeadows stations, then a taxi or rideshare.

Frequently asked questions
Does Woodlands Trail Riding take group and birthday bookings?
Yes. Woodlands takes private and group bookings for special occasions, birthday parties and corporate events, with group rates available. Email bookings@woodlands.melbourne with your group's details, or call 1300 966 352.
How old do riders need to be?
Riders on a horse riding tour must be at least seven years old and authorised by an adult. Children under seven can book led pony rides, lessons or learn-to-ride sessions instead, and equine activities start from age two.
Is there a weight limit for riders?
Ridden activities have a 95kg weight limit for the welfare of the horses. A small number of horses can carry riders up to 100kg – enquire with your exact weight and preferred date, as availability is not guaranteed.
What should we wear for a trail ride?
Wear long pants, flat enclosed shoes or boots and clothing that suits the weather. Helmets are supplied and must be worn. Turning up in unsuitable clothing means forfeiting the ride, so dress for the saddle.
What happens if it rains on the day of our ride?
Rides still run in the rain because riding is an outdoor activity. If conditions are too severe to ride safely, the team contacts you by SMS or email and offers to reschedule or give you a credit for another time.
